False bills and claims
Patient introduces false medical bill from Ukraine (The Netherlands)
A patient of Zorg en Zekerheid (the Netherlands) went for vacation to the Ukraine and claimed that he/she had been medically treated there. Suspicion arose as the medical bill (price $ 7.632,00) seemed to be a copy to which stamps and signatures had been added. The handwriting on the bill looked exactly like the handwriting of the client. Additionally the bill did not contain a description of the kind of medical treatment the patient had received.
An investigation showed no records of the patient attending the hospital, and the doctors named on the medical bill had never worked there either. Enough evidence had been collected to charge the individual, who was subsequently ordered to pay a fine.
Son claims nursing fees for his dead father (The Netherlands)
A Dutch insurance company received medical bills stating nursing fees for an elderly patient living in the UK. This person was entitled to use the Dutch insurance scheme. Nevertheless, after conducting an investigation the health insurer found out that the insured had died in 2002 and that his son had forged medical invoices for several years. The invoices were sent to the Dutch insurer, who reimbursed the amount to a bank account held by the father.
Patient claims for taxi bills whilst travelling by car (The Netherlands)
A Dutch family claimed and received compensation for medical transportation by taxi to a university hospital in the north of the Netherlands. Given the medical situation of the 21 year-old patient there was no doubt that transportation by taxi was necessary, and the insured party had received permission to do so. However after the patient had travelled for a long period of time, it appeared that many claims were fraudulent: the insured didn't travel by taxi but instead used his own car and submitted taxi bills totalling €75,000.
