Blacklist of physicians and therapists in the Netherlands

29.10.2009

Patients trust doctors with their lives and wellbeing. They need to have confidence that doctors are competent in their field of practice.

Dutch patients wishing to clarify if their physicians are entitled to practice their profession can now do so on the internet. The names of specialists, family doctors and nurses, who have been suspended or struck off from their profession, are now listed on www.ribiz.nl.

The details of these healthcare providers will also be available on www.kiesbeter.nl, a website where Dutch patients can select the best care suited for their needs.

Ab Klink, Dutch Minister of Health, had already announced such a list. The procedure to find out whether healthcare providers are allowed to practice their profession is very difficult. Because of this, the list has now been made available to the general public, containing only updated information on healthcare providers who are suspended for the current reason. Patients are not able to see any past sentences against their physicians.

To date, there are almost fifty doctors, dentists, nurses and psychotherapists listed who are no longer allowed to practice or who should introduce a request in order to practice their profession in the Netherlands.
