Online Pharmacy fakes logo

28.5.2010

It has been discovered that an online pharmacy in Russia has been illegally using a logo of a European pharmacy lobbying group. This was done so that they could be endorsed by the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU), which is based in Brussels.

This illegal website, which sells Viagra and other prescription drugs, contained a fake certificate as well as a forged signature of Filip Babylon who is the president of the PGEU.   This website was made known to PGEU when a spam email was sent to a member of the pharmaceutical group. This member then noticed that this online pharmacy had been endorsed by the PGEU, a fact that was not apparent before. Immediately after this discovery, PGEU circulated a memo warning others about this sophisticated forgery.

In principle, PGEU would like all national governments to be free to ban internet pharmacies, like the one in question, if they wish to do so. This website which was known as “Cancer Care Pharmacy” claimed to be a Canadian website based in Russia and was meant to have a strict anti – spam policy. Therefore, it is ironic that its illegal activities were discovered through a spam email sent to a member of the PGEU. Hopefully, an improvement can be made on the current state of fake medicines in July 2010 when the EU parliament votes on the proposed Falsified Medicines Directive.
